Classic Usucha (Ceremonial Matcha)

Classic Usucha
Usucha (薄茶) — “thin tea” — is the most traditional preparation of ceremonial matcha: bright, smooth, and delicately frothed.
A mindful 3–5 minute ritual · Fine foam · Clean umami finish
Light, vibrant, ceremonial
Usucha is matcha prepared with a higher water ratio than koicha (thick tea), creating a silky cup that’s easy to sip and naturally energizing. The goal is clarity: a smooth body, a fine foam, and a taste that leans sweet and creamy — not bitter.
Keep it simple: warm the bowl, sift the matcha, add warm (not boiling) water, then whisk with intention.
Ingredients & Ratio
The simplest recipe is often the most revealing: matcha, warm water, and a whisk. Precision brings sweetness.
1.5–2 g ceremonial matcha (≈ 1 tsp)
60–80 ml water at 75–80°C (167–176°F)
Optional: add 10–20 ml more water for a lighter cup.
Chawan (bowl) or wide mug
Chasen (bamboo whisk) or small frother
Fine sieve (recommended)
Sifting is the easiest upgrade for a silky texture.
Whisk 15–25 seconds
Quick “W” motion near the surface
Fine foam (micro-bubbles), not big bubbles.
The ritual steps
There is no rush in ritual. Let each step be a soft return to yourself — and let the foam tell you when it’s ready.
Ceremonial matcha is at its best when it’s vibrant, smooth, and fresh. Keep your whisking simple — and let the cup do the talking.
Serving note Usucha is best enjoyed immediately after whisking — when the aroma is freshest and the foam is finest.
Simple ingredients. Elevated ritual.
